Project Management Professional (PMP): Eligibility, 3 Domains & Exam Preparation Guide

The Project Management Professional (PMP) certification, awarded by the Project Management Institute (PMI), is the world’s premier globally recognized credential for project leaders. Accredited under ISO/IEC 17024, the PMP validates a professional’s ability to lead projects, manage cross-functional teams, and drive strategic organizational outcomes using predictive, agile, and hybrid approaches.

Before scheduling your exam, it is vital to understand PMI’s strict eligibility criteria, the 3 primary performance domains, and key study strategies.

Important Note on Exam Administration:

Capgrow provides official 35 Contact Hours exam preparation training and technical study guidance. The final PMP examination, application review, and official credentialing are administered independently by the Project Management Institute (PMI) via Pearson VUE testing centers or online proctoring.

1. Eligibility Requirements & Experience Paths

PMI requires candidates to meet specific education, project leadership experience, and training benchmarks prior to applying:

  • Secondary Degree (High School Diploma, GED, or Global Equivalent):
    • Experience: Minimum 5 years (60 months) of unique, non-overlapping professional project leadership experience within the last 10 years.
    • Education: 35 Contact Hours of formal project management education (satisfied by Capgrow’s PMP Training Course).
  • Bachelor’s Degree or Higher (or Global Equivalent):
    • Experience: Minimum 3 years (36 months) of unique, non-overlapping professional project leadership experience within the last 10 years.
    • Education: 35 Contact Hours of formal project management education (or an active CAPM certification).

2. The 3 Performance Domains (Exam Content Outline)

The PMP examination evaluates project management competency across three core domains defined in PMI’s Examination Content Outline:

  1. People (42% of Exam): Building and leading effective teams, resolving conflict, empowering team members, supporting virtual teams, and engaging stakeholders.
  2. Process (50% of Exam): Managing technical project management aspects, such as schedule, budget, risk, scope, quality, integration, and procurement.
  3. Business Environment (8% of Exam): Aligning projects with organizational strategy, evaluating governance, managing compliance, and delivering business value.

Ways of Working Covered:

Exam questions cover Predictive/Waterfall (50%) and Agile/Hybrid (50%) methodologies, ensuring candidates know how to tailor methodologies to project needs.

How Capgrow Supports Your Preparation:

Trainees enrolled in Capgrow’s PMP Exam Preparation Training receive the required 35 Contact Hours Certificate, comprehensive coverage of PMBOK concepts, agile frameworks (Scrum, Kanban), and situational practice question walkthroughs.

3. Final Exam Format & Delivery

The PMP exam is administered through Pearson VUE computer-based testing centers or remote proctoring:

  • Exam Duration: 230 minutes (3 hours and 50 minutes).
  • Question Breakdown: 180 total questions (multiple-choice, multiple-select, matching, hotspot, and fill-in-the-blank).
  • Breaks: Two built-in 10-minute breaks.
  • Exam Style: Closed-book, scenario-based situational assessment testing real-world problem analysis.

4. Practical Exam Preparation Tips

  • Adopt the PMI Mindset: PMP questions test situational decision-making (e.g., “What should the project manager do FIRST?”). Always prioritize evaluating impacts and following formal change control procedures before acting.
  • Master Agile & Hybrid Terms: Study servant leadership, sprint planning, backlogs, velocity, and daily standups alongside traditional critical path method (CPM) scheduling.
  • Pace Yourself: Aim for roughly 1.2 minutes per question to comfortably complete all 180 questions within the 230-minute allowance.

5. Maintaining Credential Validity & PDUs

To maintain an active PMP credential, holders must renew their certification every 3 years:

  • PDU Requirement: Accumulate 60 Professional Development Units (PDUs) during each 3-year cycle through continuing education, project work, presenting, or volunteering.
