Certified Reliability Engineering

ASQ Certified Reliability Engineer (CRE): Requirements, Body of Knowledge & Exam Guide

The Certified Reliability Engineer (CRE) credential, awarded by the American Society for Quality (ASQ), is one of the most rigorous and globally respected certifications for reliability professionals. Accredited under ISO/IEC 17024 by ANAB, the ASQ CRE credential validates an engineer’s ability to evaluate, predict, and enhance product, process, and system safety, maintainability, and performance throughout the entire product lifecycle.

Before scheduling your exam, it is essential to understand the eligibility structure, education waivers, the core Body of Knowledge (BoK) domains, and key exam preparation strategies.

Important Note on Exam Administration:

Capgrow provides official exam preparation training and technical study guidance. The final CRE examination, candidate eligibility review, and official credentialing are administered independently by ASQ via Prometric testing centers.

1. Eligibility Requirements & Education Waivers

ASQ maintains strict professional standards for CRE candidates. Applicants must meet specific total work experience requirements, including a decision-making component:

  • Base Experience Requirement: 8 years of on-the-job experience in one or more areas of the CRE Body of Knowledge.
  • Decision-Making Experience: At least 3 years of the required experience must be in a “decision-making” position (defined as having the authority to define, execute, or control projects/processes and take responsibility for outcomes).
  • Degree / Education Waivers (Only one waiver may be claimed):
    • Trade/Technical School Diploma: 1 year waived (requires 7 years experience).
    • Associate Degree: 2 years waived (requires 6 years experience).
    • Bachelor’s Degree: 4 years waived (requires 4 years experience).
    • Master’s or Doctorate Degree: 5 years waived (requires 3 years experience).

2. Core Domains of the CRE Body of Knowledge (BoK)

The CRE exam evaluates candidate competence across seven critical reliability engineering domains:

  1. Reliability Program Management: Strategic reliability planning, life-cycle costs, risk management, and integrating reliability into organizational objectives.
  2. Design Review & Control: Design for Reliability (DfR), reliability specifications, design review methodologies, and configuration management.
  3. Prediction, Estimation & Apportionment: Reliability modeling, failure rate estimation, stress-strength analysis, and reliability allocation.
  4. Failure Mode Effects & Analysis: FMEA/FMECA methodologies, root cause failure analysis (RCFA), fault tree analysis (FTA), and risk priority assessments.
  5. Reliability Testing: Test planning, accelerated life testing (ALT), environmental stress screening (ESS), reliability growth modeling, and compliance testing.
  6. Field Failure Analysis & Corrective Action: Field data collection, FRACAS (Failure Reporting, Analysis, and Corrective Action System), and warranty analysis.
  7. Human Factors & Reliability Information Systems: Human reliability analysis (HRA), human-machine interfaces, safety considerations, and reliability data management.

How Capgrow Supports Your Preparation:

Trainees enrolled in Capgrow’s CRE Exam Preparation Training receive comprehensive coverage of all ASQ BoK domains, step-by-step problem-solving methods for statistical and probability questions, and practice exam simulations led by veteran reliability engineers.

3. Final Exam Format & Delivery

The ASQ CRE exam is administered electronically via Prometric computer-based testing centers or remote proctoring:

  • Exam Duration: 4 hours and 18 minutes (165 total questions).
  • Scored vs. Unscored Questions: 150 scored questions and 15 unscored pilot questions.
  • Exam Style: Open-book examination. Candidates may bring personal reference materials (bound books, notes, and approved scientific calculators) into the testing room.
  • Language: Computer-based tests are conducted in English.

4. Practical Exam Preparation Tips

Passing the 165-question open-book CRE exam requires technical fluency and efficient time management:

  • Organize Your Reference Materials: Since the exam is open-book, flag key formulas, distribution tables (Weibull, Lognormal, Exponential, Normal), and statistical charts in your reference books for fast access.
  • Master Probability & Statistical Formulas: Ensure comfort calculating mean time between failures (MTBF), hazard rates, series/parallel system reliability, and confidence intervals under timed conditions.
  • Practice Time Management: Allocate approximately 1.5 minutes per question. Avoid spending excessive time looking up standard definitions—reserve reference lookups for complex formula verification.
  • Focus on FMEA & FRACAS Workflows: Understand how failure data flows from field reporting into corrective action systems to prevent recurring defects.

5. Recertification & Continuous Professional Development

To maintain active status, ASQ CRE certificants must complete recertification every 3 years:

  • Validity Period: 3 years from the date of issue.
  • Recertification Units (RUs): Certificants must accumulate 18 Recertification Units (RUs) during each 3-year cycle through professional practice, continuing education, conference attendance, or publishing.
