Introduction
Planning to elevate your career in cost management, estimating, and project controls? Earning the Certified Cost Professional (CCP) credential from AACE International is widely recognized across the energy, oil & gas, maritime, and infrastructure sectors.
Before sitting for the exam, candidates must understand the official requirements, eligibility criteria, technical paper rules, and preparation strategies.
Important Note on Exam Administration:
Capgrow provides comprehensive exam preparation training and technical paper review. The final CCP examination, eligibility verification, and certification are administered independently by AACE International.
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for the CCP certification through AACE International, candidates must meet specific professional experience and education criteria prior to taking the exam:
- Industry Experience: A minimum of 8 years of professional experience in cost engineering, project controls, estimating, planning/scheduling, or quantity surveying.
- Education Waiver: A 4-year industry-related college/university degree (such as Engineering, Building, Construction Management, Business, or Finance) substitutes for 4 years of experience, reducing the requirement to 4 years of industry work experience.
The Technical Paper Requirement
Unlike many standard multiple-choice certifications, AACE requires candidates to demonstrate practical writing and analytical competence before sitting for the exam:
- Paper Scope: Candidates must write and submit an original 2,500+ word Technical Paper on a Total Cost Management (TCM) topic.
- Abstract Criteria: Must include a clear abstract between 100 and 175 words summarizing the core analysis and conclusions.
- Formatting & Style: The paper must adhere strictly to the official AACE Technical Paper Style Guide and pass preliminary review prior to exam scheduling.
How Capgrow Supports Your Technical Paper:
Trainees enrolled in CapGrow’s CCP Exam Preparation Training receive hands-on guidance from experienced facilitators on topic selection, structure, drafting, and pre-submission peer review.
Final Exam Structure & Format
The final CCP exam is administered as a closed-book, computer-based test via Kryterion testing centers or remote proctoring:
- Exam Duration: 5 continuous hours.
- Question Breakdown: Approximately 120 multiple-choice and scenario-based calculation questions spanning four core Total Cost Management domains:
- Cost Management & Analysis
- Interfacing with Other Disciplines (Risk, Quality, Safety, Value Engineering)
- Performance Measurement & Earned Value Management (EVM)
- Project Planning, Progress, and Scheduling
- Written Communication Assessment: Includes 1 onscreen written scenario memo evaluating real-world problem analysis, cause evaluation, and executive recommendation skills.
- Passing Standard: Candidates must achieve an overall minimum score of 70%.
Practical Exam Preparation Tips
Achieving a passing score on the 5-hour CCP exam requires focused preparation beyond theoretical study:
- Master Earned Value Management (EVM): Be comfortable calculating CPI, SPI, EAC, ETC, and variance metrics under timed conditions.
- Practice Executive Memo Writing: Practice structuring written responses logically using clear problem identification, root cause analysis, and actionable project recommendations.
- Submit Technical Paper Early: Complete and submit your technical paper well before your intended exam date so you can focus entirely on practice exam questions.
- Work with Scenario-Based Calculations: Practice solving complex multi-step problems involving Discounted Cash Flow (DCF), net present value (NPV), and risk contingency allocations.
Recertification & Continuous Professional Development
Once earned, the CCP credential remains valid for 3 years. To maintain active certification without retaking the exam, certificants must accumulate 12 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) during each 3-year recertification cycle through relevant work experience, professional training, or industry contributions.
