AACE Certified Cost Professional (CCP): Eligibility, BOK Domains & Exam Guide

The Certified Cost Professional (CCP) credential, awarded by AACE International, is a globally recognized benchmark for cost management and cost engineering leaders. Accredited under ISO/IEC 17024 by ANAB, the CCP certification validates an engineer’s advanced mastery over Total Cost Management (TCM) principles, capital budgeting, economic evaluation, forecasting, and project control methodologies across complex capital projects.

Before scheduling your examination, it is essential to understand AACE’s eligibility prerequisites, technical paper requirements, the four primary Body of Knowledge (BoK) domains, and key study strategies.

Important Note on Exam Administration:

Capgrow provides official exam preparation training, technical paper review, and calculation practice. The final CCP examination, eligibility verification, and official credentialing are administered independently by AACE International via Kryterion testing centers or remote proctoring.

1. Eligibility Requirements & Prerequisites

AACE International enforces specific experience and education prerequisites prior to authorizing candidates to sit for the CCP exam:

  • Base Experience Requirement: Minimum 8 years of industry-related professional experience in cost engineering, cost estimating, planning/scheduling, or project controls.
  • Education Waiver: A 4-year relevant college/university degree (such as Engineering, Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, Business, or Finance) substitutes for 4 years of experience, reducing the requirement to 4 years of direct industry experience.

2. The Technical Paper Requirement

In addition to the written exam, AACE requires CCP candidates to demonstrate practical writing and analytical competence:

  • Paper Scope: Candidates must write and submit an original 2,500+ word Technical Paper on a Total Cost Management (TCM) or cost engineering topic.
  • Abstract Criteria: Must include a clear abstract between 100 and 175 words summarizing the core analysis and conclusions.
  • Formatting & Style: The paper must strictly adhere to the official AACE Technical Paper Style Guide and pass preliminary review prior to exam scheduling.

How Capgrow Supports Your Technical Paper:

Trainees enrolled in Capgrow’s CCP Exam Preparation Training receive hands-on guidance from senior facilitators on topic selection, structure, drafting, and pre-submission peer review.

3. Core Domains of the CCP Body of Knowledge (BoK)

The CCP exam evaluates technical competence across four core functional domains defined in AACE’s Total Cost Management (TCM) framework:

  1. Cost Management: Capital budgeting, cost estimating methodologies, parametric modeling, contingency reserves, and baseline development.
  2. Economic Analysis & Financial Mathematics: Discounted Cash Flow (DCF), Net Present Value (NPV), Internal Rate of Return (IRR), asset depreciation methods, and equipment replacement analysis.
  3. Interfacing with Other Disciplines: Project management integration, value engineering, risk analysis, quality control, safety, and contract administration.
  4. Performance Measurement & Communication: Earned Value Management (EVM), schedule variance tracking, forecasting, and an onscreen written executive communication scenario memo.

How Capgrow Supports Your Preparation:

Trainees enrolled in Capgrow’s CCP Exam Preparation Training receive hands-on instruction in EVM calculations, DCF models, parametric estimating, and structured scenario memo writing.

4. Final Exam Format & Delivery

The CCP exam is delivered as a computer-based test via Kryterion testing networks:

  • Exam Duration: 5 continuous hours.
  • Question Breakdown: 120 multiple-choice and scenario-based calculation questions.
  • Written Scenario Assessment: Includes 1 onscreen written communication scenario memo evaluating a cost engineer’s real-world problem analysis and executive recommendation skills.
  • Passing Standard: Candidates must achieve an overall score of 70% or higher.

5. Practical Exam Preparation Tips

  • Master Financial & Economic Formulas: Be fast and accurate at calculating time-value of money, present/future values, annuities, and depreciation schedules under timed conditions.
  • Practice EVM Metric Calculations: Be comfortable interpreting Cost Performance Index (CPI), Schedule Performance Index (SPI), Estimate at Completion (EAC), and To-Complete Performance Index (TCPI).
  • Practice Executive Memo Writing: Structure written memo responses logically using clear problem identification, root cause analysis, and actionable cost engineering recommendations.
  • Pace Yourself: Allocate time carefully during the 5-hour window to leave ample time for the written memo section.

6. Recertification & Continuous Professional Development

To maintain an active CCP license, certificants must renew their credential every 3 years:

  • Recertification Requirement: Accumulate 12 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) during each 3-year cycle through qualifying professional practice, training, conference attendance, or publishing.
