Introduction to Geological Storage of CO2
Workshop Overview
This course provides participants with a comprehensive knowledge of saline aquifers and depleted gas reservoirs and their application in CCUS/CCS. The course is field study based. It presents introduction, economics, and site selection for CCUS/CCS projects.
Participants will learn—how to objectively evaluate CCUS/CCS projects both outside of simulation modelling and using simulation modeling that has been done to the feasibility phase of CCUS/CCS projects. They will gain a high-level understanding of the key CCUS/CCS engineering and geoscience technical workflows, as well as the ability to understand the scale of current CCUS/CCS projects and what needs to be done to reach targets, additionally you will have the ability to understand an economic/technical model of CCUS/CCS.
Workshop Outline
Benefit of Attending this Workshop
- Will CCS be too costly at scale and is there sufficient pore space in the subsurface?
- What are the key components of a Hub? What is the cost associated with each?
- Will CO2 leak back to the surface?
- Will there be a wellbore catastrophe failure?
- How will regulatory/political/non-technical issues impact deployment?
- What is the general workflow for CCS/CCUS?
- Are the plume size and volumes of influence the same, why or why not?
- How can we mitigate subsurface uncertainty?
- What is the biggest disadvantage of using old legacy well in depleted gas and oil reservoirs?
- What is the biggest disadvantage of using Saline aquifers?
- What are the risk factors associated with dangers of contamination of water tables?
- Why are the limits of pressure of storage? (Depth > 800 m, Temperature > 35 C)
Who Should Attend to This Workshop
The course is designed for business development personal, production engineers, reservoir engineers, operations, geo-mechanical engineers and petroleum geologists with little knowledge and experience in the study of CCUS. The objective of the course is to establish a foundation so that participants can understand CCS/CCUS.
- Petroleum and Reservoir Engineers who need to determine accurate values of the properties of reservoir gas, oil and water for use in engineering calculations and Simulation studies.
- Production and Operations Engineers who want to have an understanding of the way reservoir fluids behave, the reservoir depletion process and for designing surface processing requirements
- Petro-physicists, Geo-physicists, Geologists and Non – Engineers who work in teams with Petroleum and Reservoir Engineers to estimate hydrocarbon in place and reserves
- Analysts who are required to identify markets and product prices
- Managers who seek to derive greater decision making on field development
