NORM Management for Oil and Gas Industry
Workshop Overview
Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM) is the term used to describe materials that contain radioisotopes existing in the natural environment. These materials are found in rocks, soils, mineral sands, and seawater. NORM is found almost everywhere including air, soil, drinking water, and even food products. While the concentration of NORM in most natural substances is typically low, higher concentrations may occur due to human activities such as oil and gas extraction, mining, and mineral processing.
The management of NORM in the oil and gas industry requires careful attention as it can pose potential health, safety, and environmental risks if not controlled appropriately. The same radiation exposure standards applied to all radioactive materials, as specified in IAEA and ICRP regulations, also apply to NORM. Both local rules and IAEA guidelines define exemption limits for radioisotopes below which materials are considered non-radioactive. This course provides participants with the knowledge and skills to assess, manage, and control radiation hazards associated with NORM in oil and gas operations.
